igus Wins "Going Circular" Recycling Competition by CCIC
The "Going Circular" competition, in its third edition, provided a platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their efforts in conserving resources and embracing circularity. With six competitors in the final round, igus’ "Chainge" program emerged as the winner. Michael Blass, CEO of e-chain Systems at igus, expressed pride in the team's achievement, stating that it reaffirmed their commitment to preserving valuable resources through environmentally friendly recycling of engineering plastics. The Rhineland Business Prize, awarded to the recycling program in September 2022, further acknowledged the innovative prowess of igus. Sven Gebhard, Vice President of the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce, commended the entrepreneurial spirit and emphasized the importance of such initiatives in global climate protection.
The "Chainge" program was launched by igus in 2019 to address the fate of products at the end of their service life. Often, post-consumer plastics lack sustainable reuse options and end up being incinerated. Through "Chainge," igus aimed to disrupt the linear economy by enabling customers to send their worn-out energy chains, regardless of the manufacturer, for recycling into new products. The igus E2.1.CG cradle-chain, the first energy chain made from recycled plastic, exemplifies the success of this endeavor. To expedite the transition to a circular economy, igus introduced the "Chainge" online platform in October 2022.
The platform allows users to recycle not only energy chains but also components made of various technical plastics such as PA, POM, and PBT. Additionally, it features a digital marketplace where selected recycled materials can be purchased. Lena Naumann, Head of the Chainge Business Unit, highlighted the increasing adoption of the recycling program since its inception in 2019. With approximately 85 tons of plastic already saved from incineration and reintegrated into the circular economy, igus is actively expanding its recycling network and seeking additional locations to enhance its capacity and contribute further to a sustainable circular economy.
igus’ triumph in the "Going Circular" competition reinforces their dedication to promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable manufacturing practices. By rescuing plastics from incineration and embracing the principles of circularity, igus sets a commendable example for other companies to follow. With their innovative programs and commitment to conserving resources, igus plays a significant role in shaping a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
This recognition highlights igus’ commitment to sustainability and their efforts to conserve valuable resources by returning engineering plastics to an environmentally friendly circular economy. With this achievement, igus continues to pave the way for a greener future and inspire other companies to adopt resource-conserving practices.
